The Hays County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) is seeking motivated individuals to join our team. We are currently accepting applications for the following permanent positions:
- Deputy – Must possess a Peace Officer License and be at least 21 years of age
- Corrections Officer – Must be at least 20 years of age
We also offer a variety of civilian career opportunities across multiple divisions within HCSO.
The Hays County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) is looking for new team members. We have three (3) positions that are permanent postings:
Deputy – must have a Peace Officer License and be 21 years of age.
Corrections Officer – must be 21 years of age or older to apply.
Emergency Communications Officer – must be 18 years of age or older.
We also offer civilian positions across all divisions within HCSO.

Pre-Employment Testing
Testing requirements vary by position and are subject to change. All applicants will receive specific testing details via email during the hiring process.
Deputy – Testing Requirements
Physical Agility Test
Applicants must complete a timed course that includes:
- Exiting a patrol vehicle
- Sprinting approximately 600 feet
- Navigating stairs
- Sled push (~30 feet)
- Dragging a 165-pound dummy (30 feet)
- Window and obstacle navigation
- Climbing a chain-link fence
- Completing over/under obstacles
- Final 250-foot sprint
Passing Time: 3 minutes and 30 seconds (3:30)
Row Test
- 2,000-meter row at 60% DPS standards (based on age, weight, and gender)
Typing Requirement
- Minimum 21 words per minute (WPM)
Flesch-Kincaid Writing Assessment
- 45-minute report writing exercise
Written Exam
Consist of 100 questions divided into four timed sections which include:
- Vocabulary, spelling, and grammar
- Reading/writing comprehension and deductive reasoning
- Memorization
- Math and critical thinking
Passing Score: 70 or higher
Corrections Officer– Testing Requirements
Physical Agility Test
Not timed:
- Load five rounds into a magazine and rack the slide on a Glock
Applicants must complete a timed course that includes:
- Sprint 300 feet
- Carry a 30-pound air pack through a cone course
- Drag a 165-pound dummy (30 feet)
- Sprint 90 feet carrying a 25-pound weight
- Perform 5 trigger pulls with each hand (10–12 lb pull)
Passing Time: 1 minute 30 seconds (1:30)
Typing Requirement
- Minimum 15 WPM
General Knowledge Exam
Applicants will sit for a written exam of 50 timed questions. Test sections include:
· Vocabulary, spelling, grammar
- Reading/writing comprehension
- Math and critical thinking
Passing Score: 70 or higher
Emergency Communications Officer– Testing Requirements
CritiCall
Evaluates:
- Memory retention
- Prioritization
- Data entry
- Multitasking
- Decision-making
Minimum Passing Scores:
- Data Entry: 3580
- Non-Data Entry: 78
Typing Requirement
- Minimum 35 WPM
Civilian Positions
Applicants must complete a 50-question general knowledge exam with a passing score of 70 or higher.
Additional testing may be required depending on the position, including:
- Typing tests
- Written exams
- CritiCall
- Physical agility assessments
